Gomez wows young crowd at 'Dome

When it comes to teenage pop sensations, they don't come much bigger than Selena Gomez.
Well, there's a certain well-coiffed young man who has been seen on her arm a few times who may be a tad more successful (that would be Canadian heartthrob Justin Bieber for those of you who've been wandering aimlessly and possibly half-naked through the jungles of Belize for the past three years.) But Gomez' hasn't done so bad for herself either.

Whether Bieber Fever was a factor or not, Gomez managed to sell out the Saddledome on Monday night with 14,000 teens, pre-teens, tweens and their parents. Bieber didn't make an appearance (he's currently on tour in South America), but no one was complaining. With apologies to Mr. T, I pity the fool who forgot to bring earplugs. (That fool was of course, me.) I'm no doctor, but it would seem a female's lung power is at its most robust between the ages of 11 and 16.

It was surprising Miss Gomez and her band, The Scene, could be heard above the excited shrieking of thousands of local fans. But the 19-year-old singer - who, according to TMZ.com, was the target of a death threat made by a mentally ill American man named Thomas Brodnicki recently - rose above the din with a solid 90-minute set of sugar-coated pop tunes and heartfelt ballads.

Appearing at the top of two staircases, Gomez glided on stage wearing a sparkling gold corset with a fringe and sheer, flowing train. Surprisingly, she started the show not with a song from her latest CD, When the Sun Goes Down, but rather A Year Without Rain, the title track from her 2010 album.
